There are many of us who have likely considered using spells at some point in our lives, whether for love, money, revenge, or protection. It is probably also a safe assumption that some of us have looked into various books and other resources in order to find those spells so that we may attempt to cast them ourselves.

Spellcasting comes in many forms, which are as varied as the many traditions and religions that utilize spellcasting. Despite what the movies depict, spellcasting is also much more complex than simply waving a wand and muttering a few magical words. Typically, a number of ingredients and components are utilized to cast a spell, and some form of ritual is often associated with the spellcasting, making the entire process somewhat time-consuming as well.The most common form of spellcasting utilized today by modern witches is most closely associated with Wiccanism, and is considered a natural form of spellcraft. Typically, wiccans utilize the natural energies of the four elements to tap into magical resources that can be used to positively transform themselves and the world about them.

When it comes to witchcraft, the books of shadows is considered to be an important book because it is holds the laws of witchcraft, the beliefs of the religion, incarnations, herbal laws, healing laws, techniques of divination, Sabbat rituals, dances, chants, etc. The witches consider this book to be their guide for the practicing their craft. It is important for you to know that each and every tradition have its own book of shadows. Each and every witch knows that they have to keep this book a secret and no one should know about it.

On the other hand, it is sad to know that there are many witches who have made their book of secrets known to the outside world. According to the old tradition, each coven or group should only have one copy of this book and this book of secrets is generally kept by the High priestess or the High Priest. It is believed that this book should be written by hand. It contains secrets that only witches who are in the higher positions in the hierarchy know about. All the details that are in the book of secrets will be passed out when the witch gradually reaches the top ranks of the group or coven. It is to be noted that the book of secrets can not be taken with the witch if she ever plans to leaven the coven. The book has to remain in the coven.

At one point in time, prior to the formation of the Greek City-States, Europe was far from a unified society. It was composed of many distinct ethnicities, tribes, nomadic groups, and other people who did not fit within one of the above categories. Then as people began to band and empires grew, many of these small, diverse groups were forced to assimilate to the mainstream culture at the time. One of these first Diasporas came under the rule of Alexander the Great, around 340 B.C.E. In a short period of time, Alexander was able to conquer a majority of the European people, and force them to adapt to his ideals. Then came the famous rise of the Roman Empire, which dominated people throughout Europe, and even parts of Africa and Asia. Though the Empire, extending over a period of 500 years sometimes allowed smaller groups to maintain their distinct culture, these small groups could not keep their relevance without assimilating to the Roman perspective.

After the later parts of the 19th century, and the re-emergence of many paganesque religions that were forced into hiding, many more people turned to the art of spell casting to aid them in their every day lives.

Freemasonry played a large part in the use of spell craft as a natural occurrence. They believed that it was possible to shape their own destiny and control the forces of nature by living as equals under the stars. Although their spell craft was limited, they often had with them a pentagram with a human body in the centre, to represent how grounded they were in their convictions.
