I have never known a life without the Sea. I was born in a small coastal village in the Cook Islands, surrounded by turquoise waters, tropical greenery, coral reefs, and a lagoon that seemed to change its personality with every passing hour. Some mornings the water was so peaceful it appeared almost motionless. At other times, the currents strengthened, the waves rose, and the same Sea that had offered tranquility reminded us of the tremendous power resting beneath its surface.
As a child, I did not yet have words such as Sea Witchcraft to describe the connection I felt. I simply knew that the ocean felt alive. I spent countless hours near the water, exploring the reefs, watching colorful fish disappear beneath the surface, collecting treasures that had washed ashore, and listening to the stories passed through our community. Tales of mermaids, Sea Spirits, enchanted waters, and mysteries hidden beyond the horizon were woven into life beside the lagoon. The Sea provided nourishment and beauty, but it also inspired reverence. You learned very quickly that the ocean was never something to command. It was something to understand, respect, and work alongside. As I grew older and began developing my own Magick, that childhood connection became the foundation of my spiritual practice.
The Sea Is Never Truly Still
One of the greatest lessons the ocean teaches us is that everything moves in cycles. The tide advances and retreats. Waves arrive upon the shore before returning to the greater body of water from which they came. Storms disturb the surface before tranquility eventually returns. Even when the Sea appears perfectly calm, currents continue moving beneath it.
Our lives are much the same.
There are seasons when everything seems to flow effortlessly toward us and others when life appears to pull away. There are moments of extraordinary clarity followed by uncertainty, periods of abundance followed by stillness, and times when emotions rise like waves before eventually settling again.
Sea Magick teaches us not to fear these movements. Instead, we learn to recognize them.
The retreating tide does not mean the ocean has abandoned the shore. The water will return when its cycle calls it home. Likewise, a quiet or difficult period within our own lives does not necessarily mean that we have lost our way. Sometimes we are simply between tides.
The Cleansing Power of WaterWater has long carried powerful spiritual associations with purification, healing, emotion, intuition, and renewal. Within my own practice, the Sea adds another dimension to these qualities because it is constantly moving.
A wave reaches the shore, gathers what lies within its path, and retreats. For this reason, I often think of Sea Magick as the Magick of release.
We all accumulate things we were never meant to carry forever. Disappointment. Fear. Heartache. Resentment. The lingering energy of difficult experiences. Even memories that once held tremendous importance can eventually become weights that prevent us from moving freely toward what comes next. Working spiritually with the symbolism of the Sea allows us to acknowledge these burdens and imagine placing them into something far greater than ourselves.
What would you allow the tide to carry away if you knew you did not have to retrieve it?
Sometimes that simple question reveals more than we expect.
Gifts From the Shore
Sea Witchcraft is not practiced through water alone. The shoreline offers its own collection of natural treasures, each shaped by the meeting of Earth and Sea. Shells, sea salt, stones polished smooth by waves, driftwood, sand, coastal plants, and other responsibly gathered natural objects may all become meaningful parts of spiritual practice.
I have always believed that what the Sea gives us should be received with gratitude rather than entitlement. Not everything on a beach needs to be collected. Some shells are homes. Some plants are part of fragile coastal ecosystems. Some treasures are meant simply to be admired where the tide placed them.
When I do gather something from the shoreline for my work, I consider both what it is and the journey that brought it there.
A stone polished by countless waves can symbolize endurance. A piece of driftwood can represent adaptability and survival. Sea salt can represent cleansing and protection. A shell can symbolize intuition, protection, love, or the mysteries concealed beneath the surface. The Magick does not come simply from possessing these objects. It comes from understanding the natural forces that shaped them and the intention with which we choose to work.
The Moon, the Tides, and Our Inner Waters
No discussion of Sea Magick would feel complete without acknowledging the Moon. The gravitational relationship between the Moon and Earth's oceans creates the tides that have shaped coastal life for generations. For witches, this visible relationship between the heavens and the waters below also provides beautiful spiritual symbolism.
As the Moon changes, so too does the tide. This is one reason I often align aspects of my practice with both lunar and oceanic rhythms. Waxing energies can complement work involving growth, attraction, love, confidence, and strengthening intentions. Waning energies naturally lend themselves to cleansing, release, healing, and letting go. Yet Sea Witchcraft has also taught me not to become so concerned with choosing a perfect moment that I forget to listen to what the moment itself is telling me.
Nature rarely follows our schedules. Sometimes the most meaningful spiritual work begins because something inside us quietly says, now.
Love and the OceanPeople are sometimes surprised that so much of my Spellwork centers upon love. To me, there is nothing surprising about it. Love behaves remarkably like water. It can be gentle or overwhelming. It can heal old wounds and expose vulnerabilities we thought were hidden. It adapts to the spaces it enters. It requires movement to remain healthy, and when obstructed for too long, it can become stagnant.
The Sea teaches that strength does not always require hardness. Water yields, yet over time it can reshape stone. That lesson has influenced my approach profoundly to love Magick. Love should not merely be pursued. It should be nurtured and cleansed of what prevents it from flowing freely, and given room to deepen naturally. This is why cleansing and love are so closely intertwined within my practice. Before we can welcome something beautiful, we sometimes need to wash away the emotional residue of what came before.
Bringing Sea Magick Into Your Own Practice
You do not need to have been raised beside the ocean to feel connected to it. If you can safely visit a shoreline, spend a few quiet moments simply listening. Do not immediately ask the Sea for anything. Watch how the water moves. Feel the air. Notice what the tide has revealed and what it gradually carries away.
If the ocean is far from you, you can still work with its symbolism. A bowl of salted water upon an altar, a responsibly gathered shell, imagery of the Sea, meditation upon the tides, or even the sound of waves can help create a focal point for your intentions. Begin simply. Ask yourself whether you presently need the Sea's gentleness or its strength.
Do you need cleansing?
Healing?
Love?
Renewal?
Or do you simply need permission to release something and allow the tide to take it away?
There is no single correct answer. The ocean itself possesses countless expressions, and Sea Magick can be equally adaptable.
My Sea Crafted Magick
When Roslyn invited me to share my practice as a guest of the Coven, I knew I wanted others to experience the Sea as I have always understood it: not simply as water, but as a living rhythm of cleansing, healing, love, transformation, and renewal.

My Magick draws upon the practices and spiritual understanding that have developed throughout my life beside the ocean. Within my Spellwork, I work with the symbolism and energies of the Sea to help cleanse what has become stagnant, encourage emotional healing, awaken what has become dormant, and create greater harmony between what we carry within ourselves and what we hope to welcome into our lives. Some seek the Sea because their hearts need healing. Others come because love has become distant, their energy feels burdened, or they simply sense that something within their lives needs to begin flowing again.
Whatever brings you to the water, remember that the Sea does not remain in one state forever. Neither do we. Listen to the Tide.
Even after all these years, I still find myself listening to the ocean. Perhaps that is the greatest lesson Sea Witchcraft has given me. Magick does not always require us to speak first. Sometimes we must become quiet enough to listen. Listen to what your intuition has been trying to tell you. Notice what continually returns to your thoughts. Recognize what has become stagnant. Acknowledge what your heart is ready to release.
Now, imagine yourself standing at the edge of the water.
Let the wave arrive.
Let it surround your feet.
And when it retreats toward the horizon, allow it to carry something with it.
The tide will return, but you do not have to remain exactly as you were when it left.
May the Sea cleanse what has grown heavy, awaken what has fallen quiet, and carry you gently toward the love, healing, and harmony awaiting you beyond the shore.
