“Nature that framed us of four elements, warring within our breast for regiment, doth teach us all to have aspiring minds.”

~Niccolo Machiavelli

We are all composed of the elements. Within us, we are cocktails of Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire. Our spirit, too, is composed of the energies of these natural elements. While we are elegant mixtures of the four, most people will find an affinity with one more than the others. This is often decided by one's Astrological Sun Sign, but there are other potential factors to figuring out which affinity you hold. Instead of taking an online quiz, finding out your natural affinity can be as simple as looking at your hand. The Art of Palmistry shows us that there are four hand shapes, each corresponding to an element. Finding out your Elemental Affinity is as simple as looking at your hand. Having an affinity does not immediately mean that you are “Good” at the things mentioned below; it simply means that you find certain things easier than someone of another affinity would. Likewise, simply having an affinity does not mean that you are precisely all of these things, but rather your affinity has inspired these traits within your personality.

Earth Hand: Earth hands have square palms with short fingers. People with this Earth Affinity like to be outdoors, experiencing nature. They're very hands on and tend to learn by doing and experiencing, rather than conceptualizing and theorizing. Earth People are often stubborn, quick-tempered, and can be rather impatient when things are not going their way. When confronted with a problem, they tend to meet it head on, preferring not to cut corners or take the easy way out. Hardworking and determined, Earth People are grounded, realistic, and practical. They also like to be close to the ground, and feel the Earth on their feet. Typically, Earth Hands will correlate to those born under the sign of Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn, but this is not always the case.

Air Hand: Air hands are characterized by a square palm, but long fingers and are usually quite elegant. People with the air affinity are mentally active but easily bored. They can be rather restless, always moving from one thing to another. They can be capricious and whimsical, and they prefer to be challenged. Air People love to focus on theories and facts, and their ability to analyze comes naturally to them. Logical and thoughtful, someone with the air affinity will likely be a good communicator. They are also quite prone to worrying and over-thinking, and can be slow to act if a direction is not chosen in advance. Air people feel comfortable in higher places, such as treetops and mountains, or places where there is lots of open space, providing freedom of movement and thought. Air Hands will typically correlate with those born under Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

Water Hand: Water Hands have long, rectangular palms with long fingers. People with the Water Affinity lean towards the realm of emotions and feelings. They feel deeply, even if they don't show it. They are sensitive and empathic by nature, often finding vocations in helping other people. Water people can also thrive in artistic groups, as they tend to excel in the arts due to their connection with their own emotions as well as those of others. They are at their most comfortable in calm, peaceful environments. They do not cope well with stress, and oftentimes have difficulty expressing the deep expanse of emotions they feel. Water Hands will typically correlate with those burn under Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.

Fire Hand: Like the Water Hand, Fire Hands are characterized by long, rectangular palms. However, the fingers on a fire hand are a bit shorter, sometimes appearing “stubby”. Fire people are excitable and charismatic. They always appear to be in motion, always talking with someone new or engaging in some new activity. Fire People are charismatic, charming, enigmatic, and well at ease in almost any social situation. They can prove to be quite persuasive, as they have an irresistible inner energy that inspires the fire in everyone else. They do have to slow down from time to time; they're quite susceptible to burn-out or quitting, While they are usually fun to engage, they can turn on a dime, as a life-giving fire can also turn destructive. They are fond of places with lots of light, or places that radiate with warmth and care. This hand corresponds to the signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.

Element StonesRegardless of your affinity, you are still able to learn and draw from people of other elements. We should all strive to be well-rounded people, so it behooves us to understand people with affinities different to ours. Sometimes, our affinity will draw certain people to us, while repelling others. For instance, someone with a Fire Affinity can be drawn to the security and comfort of an Earth Personality. On the other hand, they can also find an Air-Type to be inspiring and uplifting, or a Water Person to be a good lesson in calming down once in a while. It is a good lesson to introspect, discover your elemental affinity, and see how you can learn from the traits of others.

Blessed Be.
